# Create a privacy policy page

### Introduction

In today’s business environment, it’s very likely that your business needs a privacy policy. Ultimately, it can provide a safeguard for both you and your customers.

If you collect personal information from your website visitors, you are required by law to have a privacy policy posted to your website (and your mobile app, if you have one). If a dispute arises about the way your business used someone’s information, a privacy policy may provide some liability insurance.

Aside from the legal requirements, a privacy policy can be an important part of fostering trust and transparency between you and your customers.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the ePrivacy Directive (ePR) affect how your store may use cookies to track your visitors from the EU. The privacy policy is one of the essential legal requirements for your Shopify store.

Even if you just have a small business, you might be surprised to discover that you still need a privacy policy. Basically, your store collects personal data, and any additional application you have installed may also collect similar data. That’s why you need a privacy policy that informs your customers and visitors about this according to privacy laws in most jurisdictions, including the EU and the US.

### Checklist

Your store's privacy policy should inform the user of the following:

* What information is collected from the user
* How do you collect this information
* Why do you collect this information
* With whom that information will be shared
* How uses can manage or opt out of data collection
* How will you protect the user’s data
* How users can request to access, correct, or delete their personal data
* How can users contact you
    
### Shopify Policies

If you already have a Shopify store you can generate policies pages from inside your store. Navigate to **Settings** from the left menu and then select the **Policies** option.

On the right of your screen, you can scroll to the Privacy Policy block.

In this popup, you can make any edits  and then **save**. 
This policy page is accessible from the URL:  *your-store*.myshopify.com/policies/privacy-policy. 
This page can be used on your store menu to be accessible from your visitors.

Another page from which you can do the same task as earlier is by using the [free privacy policy generator](https://www.shopify.com/tools/policy-generator), which has been updated to include the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which can help make sure your business complies with the law and encourages customer trust. Is the same as before but you can access this tool outside Shopify as well.
