Consent Model & Regions (New Banner Version)


In this version, the previous Geolocation page has been replaced with the Consent Model & Regions configuration, which integrates with Shopify’s Customer Privacy API to manage consent behavior across different regions.


Overview


The Consent Model & Regions section controls how consent is collected and applied depending on the visitor’s location.


This configuration determines:


  • How user consent is handled (opt-in, opt-out, or flexible).
  • In which regions the banner is visible.
  • What consent rules apply to visitors based on their region.


You can access these settings from:

The consent model works together with the Banner configuration, which controls how the banner appears to visitors.




The Consent model defines the logic that determines when cookies and tracking technologies are allowed to run.


Different regions may require different consent approaches. The consent model allows the banner to apply the appropriate behavior automatically or through custom configuration.




Strict opt-in / GDPR


With this model, visitors must actively give consent before any non-essential cookies or tracking technologies are enabled.


Characteristics:


  • Data collection begins only after consent is given
  • Tracking scripts remain blocked until the visitor accepts
  • Often used in regions with stricter consent requirements




If your store targets visitors in the European Union (EU), it is generally recommended to apply a strict opt-in model and ensure that all available consent controls and category options are enabled so visitors can make a clear and informed choice.



Standard opt-out / CCPA


With the opt-out model:


  • Cookies and tracking may be enabled by default.
  • Visitors are provided with a clear option to decline or opt out.


This model is commonly used in regions where regulations require a clear option to refuse data processing rather than explicit consent before collection.



Auto-pilot / Geotargeting


This model automatically selects the consent behavior depending on the visitor’s location.


Typical behavior includes:


  • Opt-in consent for regions requiring explicit consent
  • Opt-out consent for regions where opt-out models are commonly used


The system detects the visitor’s location and applies the appropriate policy automatically.



Custom Configuration


Custom configuration allows merchants to define different consent behaviors per region.


This option is designed for stores that operate in multiple jurisdictions and require more granular control over consent logic.


Custom configuration is available on Premium and Enterprise plans.



Regions Visibility


The Regions visibility settings define where the banner and consent policies apply.


Merchants can configure:


  • Worldwide visibility

The same consent model is applied to all visitors.


  • Region-specific configuration

Different regions can use different consent models.



Supported regions may include:


  • EU / EEA & United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Switzerland
  • Brazil
  • Japan
  • Australia
  • Other supported regions


When using custom configuration, each region can have its own consent behavior.




For stores that receive visitors from the European Union, it is generally recommended to configure the banner with a strict opt-in consent model.


This ensures that:


  • Non-essential cookies are not activated before consent.
  • Visitors can review cookie categories before accepting.
  • Consent is clearly recorded before tracking technologies run.




The Consent Model controls the logic behind consent, while the Banner settings control how the consent dialog appears.


In practice:


  • Consent Model → Defines how consent decisions affect tracking and cookies.
  • Banner Settings → Defines how visitors interact with the consent dialog.


Together, these settings determine the overall consent experience for store visitors.
