How to add a multilingual cookie consent banner?

Ensure full accessibility and compliance for international customers by enabling a multilingual cookie consent banner in your Shopify store with Pandectes GDPR Compliance.

Introduction

A multilingual banner ensures that visitors from different regions see your consent message in their own language. This improves trust, accessibility, and compliance with international regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, LGPD, and others.

This guide walks you through the steps to configure a multilingual banner inside the Pandectes GDPR Compliance app.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Open Language Settings

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin.
  2. Open the Pandectes GDPR Compliance app.
  3. Go to Settings > Language & Translations.

Step 2: Set your banner's default language

  • In the Published languages section, choose your banner’s default language.
  • All languages are supported by the app. For EU languages, translations are included by default.
  • To enable auto-translation for non-EU languages, you’ll need to upgrade to the Enterprise Plan and use the Google Translate integration.

Step 3: Add more languages

If you want your banner to be multilingual, add additional languages to the list.

Step 4: Choose Language Detection Method

On the right-hand side of the page, under Language Detection, select how the app should determine which language to display for each visitor.

Available methods:

  1. From user preferences (browser)

Uses the browser’s default language as set by the visitor.

  1. From IP address (geolocation)

Detects the visitor’s country by IP and applies the corresponding language.

  1. From URL

Reads the language code from your store’s URL (useful if you’re using Shopify’s native multilingual support or a translation app).

  1. From store language (locale)

Applies the language defined in your Shopify store’s locale settings

If the language cannot be determined with the selected method, the banner will fall back to the default app language.

Summary

By setting up a multilingual cookie banner, you can:

  • Display consent messages in multiple languages.
  • Automatically detect and apply the correct language for each visitor.
  • Improve accessibility and user trust.
  • Stay compliant with GDPR, CCPA, LGPD, and other privacy laws worldwide.
